Ampersand Mountain
...The Heart of Saranac...

Ampersand holds the coveted position of “Best 6er” in my book. That may be a controversial take for some, but my opinion has not changed over the years, even after giving them all multiple takes. Ampersand is the perfect day climb, not too short or too long, just right. Ampersand is also mildly challenging, but not as rigorous as your average High Peak.

Ampersand also has a surprisingly sprawling peak, with plenty of space to rest, spread out, and drink in the High Peak quality views. Depending on when you decide to tackle it, Ampersand can be a pretty busy trail, but is generally very mild and should be okay for almost all groups.

  • Parking here is basically road-side and fairly limited, but also not incredibly popular. You should be fine as long as you get there early.
  • We’ve seen this lot both empty and packed, but the mountain peak has never been crowded.
  • The trail is gradual but increases in difficulty near the top. Nothing to crazy, but a few fun scrambles.
  • Its position makes it very windy under certain circumstances, winter climbers beware for low temperatures.

I'm unfamiliar with the nearby mountains and lakes, at least one of them is probably Saranac.

Ampersand Mountain - 3,694'

As previously mentioned, this is one of my favorite climbs, and I it believe to be the best and most enjoyable “Saranac 6er.” When I was a kid, ignorant to the vastness of trails and climbs in the area, we did this one almost every summer. You get a little bit of everything up here, some lakes, some mountains, just all around great views.

-not only do I recommend this one, but I suggest you save it for your last Saranac 6er-

I’ve done this one in the blistering cold and the blazing heat, I greatly prefer the later, but both are pretty great. Ampersand also has a pretty well maintained and frequently used trail, which means you won’t be running into too much unkempt nonsense (there’s always a little bit in the spring).

There are one or two small running creek beds on the walk out if you need to get some water purified, but this one really isn’t too long and won’t be needed by most people. Even still, it’s an option.

The Peak here is deceptively sprawling, almost split into two large lookouts but a very thin tree line, some people don’t even notice it when summiting. The views are not exactly 360, but very nearly and almost nothing is blocked out from the highest point.
