Rochester, not unlike Upstate New York’s other major cities like Buffalo, Syracuse and Albany, often engages in publicly (but actually privately) funded concerts in public venues. Enter Party in the Park – and Almost Queen – stage right. Let’s not forget, the Party in the Park is a party, and you if you wanna party, you’re gonna have to rock (and break the rules).
All the bench marks are here, the sound is solid, the beers are ten dollars, and my shitty 75-300mm Sigma isn’t doing as good of a job as I’d like it to. As much as I love live music, the “open courtyard” style is probably my least favorite of all time. The sound isn’t nearly as good, the performance is more than 60 yards away, and the “party” pretense out weighs the show 3 to 1. None of that makes it bad experience, but it is something I just don’t have a whole ton of appreciation for.
As far as parties go, these guys can run one. As far as Queen covers go, they’re pretty solid there as well. I’m really only familiar with the classics, and all of them that I know made an appearance. These guys also really nailed the “look” and the pageantry I would imagine when hearing queen on the radio, definitely something to appreciate.
